hey alex, good piece. i couldn't agree more in the sentiment, "A touch of slave morality makes a population easier to manage."

at the tail end of the boomers, i'm old enough to remember a generation caught up in a lot of goofy hippie crap. at the same time, we:

1. very consistently fought against a criminal war;
2. bounced a criminal out of the white house and sent many of his minions to the mat - save for perhaps the biggest shithead, kissinger, who as the architect of the tet offensive that escalated, terrorized, maimed, and killed hundreds of thousands, was curiously given the nobel peace prize;
3. fought hard for civil rights and racial equality, and,
4. fought hard for women's rights.
5. produced an inordinate amount of great movies, music, books, even underground papers and comics.

today, it's fear PLUS... CONSUMPTION! wasn't it george dumbya bush who urged us to go shopping in 9/11's aftermath? i may be afraid, but i have the power of mastercard by my side. marx was dead wrong about religion, because the power to *instantly* consume things... THAT's the ultimate crack. now, consider how big the storage business is in america, then think about the millions of people with garages that can't even park their cars in them because they're full of... STUFF. ever see that a&e show, hoarders? www.aetv.com/hoarders

add to that credit card debt now thought by some - yours truly included - as one of the next bubbles to burst...

yeah, it's fear alright that's the monster. trouble is, the monster is US.
